Cabrillo baseball falls to Ohlone in Coast Conference battle | Local Roundup (2024)

Anthony Karagiannopoulos had two hits, one walk, one RBI, and a run scored, but Cabrillo College’s baseball team lost 4-2 to visiting Ohlone in the teams’ Coast Conference South Division game Thursday.

Nico Hilger had a hit, walk, and run scored for the Seahawks.

Oscar Knapp gave up three runs, two earned, over six innings and took the loss. He gave up four hits and one walk and struck out five batters.

Ray Hernandez earned the complete-game win for the Renegades (26-11, 13-4). He gave up two runs, one earned, five hits and four walks and struck out seven.

Cabrillo (17-19, 10-7) hosts Hartnell (12-25, 5-12) on Saturday at 1 p.m.

Boys tennis

At Scotts Valley 7, SLV 0: The SCCAL co-champion Falcons closed the regular season with asweep on senior day Thursday.

Short-handed SLV had three players, so only two matches were played; No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles. SLV defaulted the remaining five matches.

Senior Evan Anderson defeated senior Dylan Konigsberg 1-6, 7-5, 1-0 (10-8) in singles. The sophom*ore tandem of Jacob Bodeman and Lincoln Verinsky beat Asher Schwarzbach and Jacob Aufdermeyer 6-4, 6-3 in doubles action.

Scotts Valley (9-1) and co-champion Aptos (9-1) compete in a playoff at Imperial Courts in Aptos on Friday at 3:30 p.m. The winner will represent the SCCAL in the Central Coast Section team playoffs.

Aptos 6, at Santa Cruz 1: The Mariners won their regular-season finale Thursday to finish as SCCAL co-champion with Scotts Valley.

Koosha Safari, Ben Zaretsky, and Jack Eldredge earned singles wins for the Mariners. Aptos swept doubles action, getting wins from Sean Spencer and Samer Awwad, Jack Taylor and Adam Allen, and Nick Hambright and Nico Salinas.

Taylor and Allen beat Max Shumaker and Cal Pena 6-3, 4-6, 1-0 (10-8) at No. 2 doubles.

The Cardinals’ Jeremy Arulanantham beat John McGowan at No. 3 singles, 6-7, 7-5, 1-0 (10-7).

At Soquel 6, Harbor 1: The Knights (5-5) closed the regular season with a win over the short-handed Pirates in SCCAL play Thursday.

The Pirates defaulted all three doubles matches.

Soquel’s Jack Irving, Cian Francis, and Leo Hagedorn earned singles wins. Harbor’s Angel Munoz won by default at No. 4 singles.

Boys golf

Santa Cruz 208, SLV 218: The Cardinals handed the Cougars their first SCCAL loss on the front nine at Black Horse Golf Course in Seaside on Thursday.

The Cardinals’ Braden Brooks and Cougars’ Keenan Buntz shot 40 and shared medalist honors.

Tobin Ortiz (41), Cliff Chesnut (42), Sam Wickens (42), and Brodie Weld (43) also scored for the Cardinals (4-4).

James Dahlen (42), Luke Fontiell (44), Connor Scarborough (45), and Mason Atkinson (47) also scored for the Cougars (8-1).

Running

Boston 5K: Vanessa Fraser, a former standout distance runner at Scotts Valley High and Stanford University, took 36th out of 9,145 runners at the Boston 5K on Saturday. She finished in 15:36.

NBA G League

Postseason honors: Santa Cruz Warriors guard Kendric Davis was named to the 2023-24 NBA G League All-Rookie Team on Thursday.

During the regular season, Davis averaged 18.7 points, 4.6 rebounds, 8.8 assists and 1.3 steals in 31.4 minutes over 34 games, all starts. He shot 42.2% from the field and 35.8% from 3-point range.

Davis was named the NBA G League Player of the Week for games played from Jan. 22-28.

High school softball

At Scotts Valley 11, Soquel 0; 5 inn.: Sofie Seese, Jazzy Phillips and Chloe Kent combined for a no-hitter in the Falcons’ SCCAL win Thursday. The Knights drew one walk and struck out five times.

Jazzy Doubek had two hits and two RBI, Gracie Delgado and Chloe Kent each had two hits and one RBI.

Scotts Valley (7-4, 7-0) hosts SLV (10-8, 6-2) on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.

At Watsonville 3, MVC 2: Cameron Llamas had two hits and one RBI in the Wildcatz’s PCAL Mission Division win Tuesday.

Amelia Martinez doubled, drove in a run, and scored for the Wildcats. Ashley Jimenez had a hit and scored a run, and Mia Espinoza also scored.

Kayla Fullalove-Silveira had two hits and one RBI for MVC, and Juliana Lopez and Sofia Calomeni scored runs.

Martinez gave up one unearned run in her complete-game win. She gave up three hits and five walks and struck out 12 batters.

Mae Martin took the complete-game loss. She gave up five hits, one walk, and one earned earned run. She struck out three batters.

High school baseball

St. Francis 5, at Monterey 2: Nash Horton had two hits, two stolen bases, and two RBI in the Sharks’ PCAL Gabilan Division win at Sollecito Park on Thursday.

Pedro “Jr.” Ibarra had three hits and one RBI for the Sharks. Trey Silva had a hit a scored twice. Micah Cervantes and Nicholas Fantl each had a hit and run scored, and Evan Dyer and Mason Borrego each had a hit and RBI.

Winning pitcher Adrian Leon scattered nine hits and three walks over six innings. He struck out five batters. Losing pitcher Luke Miramontes gave up seven hits, two walks and four runs over 2 2/3 innings.

St. Francis (14-4, 10-3) hosts Hollister on Monday at 4 p.m.

Palma 4, at MVC 1: The Mustangs were held to three hits in their PCAL Gabilan Division loss Thursday.

Winning pitcher Alan Gonzalez gave up one run over five innings.

MVC (1-16, 1-13) hosts Lynbrook (6-12) in a nonleague game on Friday at 4 p.m.

Girls lacrosse

Stevenson 20, MVC 12:Kyra Driscoll had five goals and one assist in the Mustangs’ loss Thursday.

Goalie Jana Bacero-Duncan made 17 saves for the Mustangs. Maya Moore had three goals and three assists, and Rhazelle Gonzales had two goals, two assists and four ground balls.

Boys track and field

Aptos at Santa Cruz: Junior Logan Brantley posted a personal-best mark to place first the shot put (54-0), the third-best mark in the CCS this season, in the Mariners’ SCCAL meet Thursday. He also took first in the discus (147-10).

Santa Cruz senior Luke Tanguay took first in the 110 hurdles (16.37) and 300 hurdles (40.39), posting a personal-best finish on the latter. HIs 300 mark is the fifth-best in the CCS this season.

Aptos senior Joseph McGibben also won two events. He placed first in the 100 (11.29) and 200 (23.10).

Other Mariners winners included:seniors Mateo Calfee (high jump, 6-0), Carlos Gutierrez-Torres (triple jump, 37-10), and Zander Watson (pole vault, 10-0),junior Brett Swertfa*ger (400, 56.08), and sophom*ore Ben Comilang (long jump, 18-10.5). Aptos also won the 4×100 relay (44.95).

Other Cardinals winners were: junior Eli Fitchen-Young (800, 1:59.11),senior Kees Van der meer (1,600; 4:38.66), andsophom*ore Robert Stanford (3,200; 10:40.62). Santa Cruz won the 4×400 (3:36.22).

At Soquel 94, Harbor 17: Junior Nolen Westfall placed first in the long jump (17-7) and triple jump (38-0), and tied for first in the high jump (5-8) in the Knights’ SCCAL meet Thursday.

Soquel senior Braylon Noble took first in the 200 (23.54) and pole vault (12-6), andjunior teammate Tomas Church took first in the 800 (2:08.97) and tied for first in the high jump (5-8).

Other Knights winners were senior Zeke Pelot (3,200; 12:13.87), junior Masen Coso (shot put, 40-11), sophom*ore Django Diallak (discus, 109-1), and freshman Chayton Merrell (1,600; 5:13.31). Soquel won the 4×100 relay (43.48).

Harbor earned wins from juniors Luke Wyland (100, 11.83) and Benicio Lona (400, 1:00.84).

Greenfield Cluster:Pajaro Valley junior Izaak Ocampo took first in the 200 (24.31) and 400 (53.77) in the eight-team cluster meet at Greenfield High on Thursday.

Senior David Hernandez took first in the 800 (2:14.20) and the Grizzlieswon the 4×400 relay (3:53.37).

Girls track and field

Aptos at Santa Cruz: Senior Ava Churchill took first in the 400 (1:01.24), high jump (4-8), and triple jump (32-5) for the Mariners in their SCCAL meet Thursday.

The Mariners also received wins from junior Izzy Graff (100, 13.17),senior Malia Moreno (3,200; 14:01), and freshman Ellie Marta (discus, 91-3). Aptos won the 4×100 relay (50.49)

Santa Cruz senior Ariel Ferrell took first in the shot put (26-1) and tied for first in the pole vault (9-6) with teammates Hayden Mandell and Meilia Nee.

The Cardinals also received wins from seniors Lucinda Steiner (100 hurdles, 16.66) and Rhys Kriege (300 hurdles, 54.98), junior Heidi Green (1,600; 5:27.74),sophom*ores Joy Hilldale (200, 27.02) and Chloe Hood (800, 2:33.09), and freshman Aaliyah Rivas (triple jump, 15-11.5).Santa Cruz won the 4×400 relay (4:24.00).

At Soquel 82, Harbor 23:Sophom*ore Summer Shields took first in the shot put (22-11.5) and discus (84-11) in the Knights’ SCCAL meet win Thursday.

Seniors Jonelle Scott (long jump, 15-6), Hannah Heitmeyer (100, 13.43), Nola Salazar (3,200; 14:34.88), andCharlotte Bacum (triple jump, 26-7), andsophom*ore Indy Smith (200, 26.33) also earned wins for the Knights. Soquel freshmen Caden Huntley and Juliet Dunton tied for first in the pole vault (7-0).

Harbor junior Ava Bibighaus and freshman teammate Julianne Sanguinetti tied for first in the high jump (4-6).

Greenfield Cluster:Pajaro Valley sophom*ore Emily Lopez took first in the 800 (2:44.16) and 1,600 (6:02.17) in the eight-team cluster meet at Greenfield High on Thursday.
