Why We Love Turkey Burger Sliders

My favorite way to make these turkey burger sliders with cheese is to grill them, but they can be cooked in a pan on top of the stove also for a quick and simple dinner.

We grill for about three out of four seasons of the year in our house. It always makes for quick and easy dinner, and keeps the heat outside, along with some of the cooking mess.

While I don’t consider myself an expert at the BBQ, being comfortable with your grill is a great way to put a super delicious meal on the table that the kids will love too.

We used to always make regular sized burgers, but I quickly found they were too big for little hands and really too big of a portion. While we sometimes still make full-sized burgers, we often mix up dinner with a slider size. Often my husband and I will eat two, and the kiddo will eat one.

This size is pretty friendly for a party also, especially when you have a lot of kids or a lot of sides. We served these at several backyardbbq’s we’ve had. I think the most notable was in honor of the summer 2017 solar eclipse. We had a big backyard party and cut the cheese to look like suns to make eclipse burgers.

But for every day, unless you plan on teaching about astronomy around the table a regular slider will be a big hit all on its own. Top with your favorite toppings, and serve hot off the grill or griddle.

To keep my burgers consistent, I like to use a ring. I found mine in a cookie cutter set, it’s 2.5 inches across. You can use this to press your sliders into for more consistent burgers, like this!

Turkey Burger Slider Recipe FAQ

What Temperature Do You Cook Turkey Burgers To?

The safest way to know if your turkey burgers are done is to use a meat thermometer. The inside of a turkey burger should be 165 degrees. I know I was concerned as a parent that meat was cooked safely, and I looked this up more than once to ensure I was cooking the burger properly all the way through without over-cooking. Turkey is a lean meat and can quickly dry out, so pull the turkey burgers off the grill or pan as soon as they are done.

Is It Ok For Turkey Burgers To Be Pink Inside?

The only way to make sure a turkey burger is done is to check with a meat thermometer to make sure the internal temperature is 165. Turkey burgers will occasionally still have a slight bit of pink and register at 165 degrees. If still undercooked after checking the temperature, cook for an additional one to two minutes on each side.

How Long Do You Cook a Turkey Burgers?

The amount of time you need to cook a turkey burger can vary depending on the thickness you make your patty. Most turkey burgers need between three to five minutes on each side to cook all the way through. If you’re unsure, start by cooking your burgers for three minutes on each side. It is also important not to overcook turkey burgers as they will dry out more quickly than other meats because they are so lean.

How Do You Keep Turkey Burgers From Falling Apart?

One secret to keep turkey burgers from falling apart is to use an egg. I’ve found that by adding that egg, your meat stays extra juicy on the grill or on the pan. The burgers can say together just fine without the egg, but the egg tends to help a lot.

Can I Omit The Egg Or Breadcrumbs? I Am Egg Or Gluten Free

You can omit the breadcrumbs and the egg, but you need to omit both the breadcrumbs and the egg together. This helps keep the burger at the right consistency. If you choose to omit the egg and breadcrumbs without replacing watch carefully how long you cook the burgers as it is much easier for them to dry out when cooking.

If you are gluten free you can grind oats in your food processor into oat flour (check the oats, oats are naturally gluten-free but some are not due to sharing facilities). You can also easily substitute a flax egg.

My friend Krysten over at Really Are You Serious has a super yummy southwest BLT lettuce wrap that is seriously amazing and is also gluten and dairy free for another option. It works great for a summer BBQ, for lunch or dinner too!

Psst! Make this King of the Grill Apron as a gift, a fun and easy for kids to make.

Turkey burger sliders have just the right amount of juicy flavor packed into a mini size perfect for kids and adults both! Cook these easy and delicious burgers on the grill, or make them on the stove for a quick and easy dinner.

Ingredients

  • 1 large egg
  • 1 pound ground turkey
  • 1/2 cup panko breadcrumbs
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika
  • 2 teaspoons parsley
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon pepper

Instructions

  • In a small bowl, beat egg lightly with a fork until the yolk breaks.

  • In a large bowl, combine ground turkey, beaten egg, spices and panko. Oil hands to keep the meatjuicy. Mix gently with hand until just combined.

  • Form patties into eight small round balls, then flatten into patties as flat as you can.

  • Cook on medium heat on the grill or in a pan for three minutes on each side. Check with a meat thermometer to make sure burgers reach 160 degrees inside.

  • Top with cheese and slide them on to your favorite slider sized buns or rolls, and enjoy!

Notes

When mixing meat, oiling your hands can help keep the turkey juicy. Mix until combined but try to avoid overmixing as it can cause burger textureto become crumbly.

When forming burgers, patties should be as flat as possible. Burgers will shrink as they cook, so don’t be surprised if when raw they seem larger then the bun. When they cook and shrink they will be just right!

Add your favorite slider rolls and a little bit of cheese, we prefer sharp cheddar for extra flavor.

So good! I used only 1 tsp dried parsley and added a dash of Worcestershire sauce and about tsp of Dijon mustard into the mixture. Served on wheat slider buns with avocado, lettuce and bacon; apple slaw and fries on the side .
I second the oiled hands tip! Perfectly moist burgers.
Thank you for the recipe! My family enjoyed it.

Simply delicious! I didn’t use any of the seasonings but used 2 tsp McCormick’S Steak Seasoning, 2 tsps dried parsley and 2 glugs of BBQ sauce. I did add the egg and Panko crumbs. The oiled hands tip worked perfectly! Thank you!

So glad it was delicious for you, and the oiled hands tip was a keeper. It really helps to keep that turkey from drying out for the grill. Happy grilling!
