Reverend Edward Burton and I held a press conference yesterday to provide an update on our campaign to rename Roanoke’s Federal Building after trailblazing civil rights attorney Reuben Lawson.Last February, the Senate unanimously approved a bill that renames the Federal Building after Reuben Lawson. We announced at the press conference that Congressman Cline last month informed us he has cleared this Bill with Speaker Mike Johnson. We are appreciative of the opportunities we have had to meet with Congressman Cline and that the full House of Representatives can now vote on the Bill to rename the federal building after Reuben Lawson. Here's what I had to say:"It's dead in the water, and whether it's ever resurrected is unlikely," John Fishwick, former U.S. attorney for the Western District, told The National Desk. He also noted that the documents case against the former president was the "strongest" and "fairest" case against Trump.Fishwick said whether Smith gets another shot depends mainly on time, which is quickly dwindling. We appreciated the opportunity to meet with Congressman Ben Cline last Friday about renaming Roanoke’s Federal Building after civil rights lawyer Reuben Lawson.Reuben Lawson was a civil rights titan, but unfortunately, he is not as well-known as his peers like Oliver Hill. He brought the legal cases that successfully integrated the schools in Grayson County, Floyd County, Pulaski County, Lynchburg City, Roanoke City, and Roanoke County. This was not easy work, as he had to overcome many roadblocks and the “massive resistance” that was commonplace in the South in the late 1950s and 1960s. A federal courthouse is where our citizens go to vindicate rights and it should be named after someone who reflected that principle. Reuben Lawson did just that.
