A skill is mastered when the SmartScore reaches 100, but the number of questions it takes to master a skill varies with every student. To continuously motivate students, IXL

Students will need to answer as many as 10 questions correctly in a row to achieve mastery. For most skills on IXL, students will have to complete a minimum of 28 questions to earn a SmartScore of 100. When a student achieves a score of 100 on IXL, you can feel confident that they have truly mastered that skill.

A score of 80 is considered proficiency and 90 is excellence. Both scores show a strong understanding of a skill and may be the perfect stopping point. Mastery (a score of 100) is an extra challenge!

Here's how IXL defines each category: Mastered -- student has a SmartScore of 100. Proficiency -- student has a SmartScore of at least 80. Practiced -- student has answered at least 1 question and the SmartScore is less than 90. No Practice -- student has not answered any questions.

You can reset SmartScores for all students or a specific class directly from the Skill Analysis Report. At the top of the Class Breakdown section, simply click “Reset SmartScores” to access the drop-down menu.

These levels range from 0-1300, with 0-50 representing pre-K, 50-100 kindergarten, and 1300 representing the end of 12th grade. When students have completed their diagnostic, they can also check their own levels by visiting the Assessment tab.

An IXL Diagnostic level of 500 represents readiness to begin working on fifth-grade level skills. When a level is displayed as a circle with a star in it, your exact level has been revealed! Continue answering questions to pinpoint your overall levels, reading level, and exact level in every strand.

Grade level guide: 100 = 1st grade, 200 = 2nd grade, 300 = 3rd grade, 400 - 4th grade, 500 = 5th grade, 600 = 6th grade, 700 = 7th grade, 800 = 8th grade, and 900 = 9th grade. By clicking on the IXL image above or the word IXL, students will be forwarded to the log in page.

One major drawback of IXL is its emphasis on repetitive practice rather than fostering deep understanding. The program often focuses on isolated skills without providing real-world context or opportunities for critical thinking.

Researchers found that the IXL Real-Time Diagnostic demonstrates high reliability as a measure of math and ELA achievement. Additionally, IXL's diagnostic is a good predictor of performance (using ILEARN as a criterion measure), with a correlation of . 90 in math and . 86 in ELA.

When a student starts practicing a skill, the SmartScore starts at 0. As the student answers questions correctly, the SmartScore increases. If a question is answered incorrectly, the score decreases.

IXL's diagnostic scores range from 0-1300 correspond to grade levels for easy interpretation. A diagnostic level increase of 100 reflects growth of approximately one grade level.
