The Tamagotchi Plus Color, which people often call TMGC+C for short, was a big release in the franchise. It was the first Tamagotchi to have a screen with lots of bright colors, not just black and white.
On November 16, 2008, fans got their early peek at this device. Two stores in Japan, called TamaDepa, let some lucky fans buy the TMGC+C early. These fans got to have the new Tamagotchi a whole week before everyone else. Most people had to wait until November 22, 2008, to get their hands on the TMGC+C. That’s when it started selling in regular stores.
Later on, in July 2009, they came out with a different version called the Hexagontchi. This was another step forward in making these colorful virtual pets even better.
Design
The Tamagotchi Plus Color is bigger than the older Tamagotchis. It has a cover to protect its screen, just like another release called TamagoChu. The screen doesn’t have the “cracked” look around it anymore, but you can still see that design on the back where the batteries go. There’s also a special sensor on top.
This Tamagotchi comes in lots of colors. When it first came out, you could get it in White, Black, Pink, Magenta, Green, Blue, or Orange. Later, on March 20, 2009, they added more colors: Yellow, Navy, Green + White, and Cream + Pink.
The best thing about this Tamagotchi is its colorful screen. It’s not black and white like the old ones. The screen is 1.52 inches big and shows 128 by 128 tiny dots (called pixels) that make up the pictures. This made the Tamagotchi look much better than before.
They also made 2 special versions. One is called “Exile,” named after a Japanese band. The other is called “Hexagon,” based on a Japanese TV game show. Both of these special ones only come in red and white. The “Exile” version works just like the regular Tamagotchi Plus Color. But the “Hexagon” version (also called “Hexagontchi”) is different. It has its own games, characters, things to buy and food for your pet. This makes it special compared to the others.

Timeline
The Tamagotchi Plus Color, sometimes just called Tamagotchi Color, was a big deal for Tamagotchi fans. It was the first time these little pet toys had full-color screens instead of just black and white. Bandai first sold these in Japan in November 2008.
After the first one did well, Bandai kept making new versions. In 2009, they came out with more Tamagotchi Plus Colors that could do new things and looked different. Over the next few years, they made even more. Each new one had different characters to play with, but they all had the color screens.
Bandai kept improving these color Tamagotchis for years. They made the pictures look better, added new things to do, and made it easier to connect with other toys. Japan usually got the new versions first, before other countries did.
Gameplay
The Tamagotchi Plus Color has lots of new things that make it more fun. Instead of just playing games, your pet can now go to different places. There’s a new door picture that lets you do this. Some places are always open, and some open up as your pet gets older. For some places, you need to buy special passes at the store. Here are some of the places your pet can go:
- Game Center: Has 3 fun games: Apples, Cards, and Archery.
- Tamatama Market: A store where you can buy things and passes.
- Home Remodeling Center: Where you can change how your pet’s house looks inside.
- Playground: Where your pet can play with others.
There are also other places like a Prize Center, a place to find a date, an Amusement Park, and even a castle!
The game has a new Shower feature to keep your pet clean. You use it when your pet looks dark brown on the screen. You can also plant trees now. When they grow, they give you items. Some special seeds give you special items, like McDonald’s stuff or letters.
The game changed how it shows how happy your pet is. Now there’s a bar that can go up to 80 spaces. You can find 7 special “Happy Items” like a Rainbow or a Four-Leaf Clover to make this bar bigger.
The weather in the game changes based on the month and time of day. It can be sunny, rainy, or even stormy. The weather changes what your Tamagotchi can do and what items you can use.
Lastly, the game features aRoyal Castle house transformation. By upgrading all room interiors to the Royal theme, players can transform their Tamagotchi’s house into a majestic castle, costing a total of 15,000 Gotchi points.
Special Editions
The Tamagotchi Plus Color has a special version called the EXmotchi. It’s named after a famous Japanese band called Exile. This is a cool way to mix music fans with people who like these digital pets. The EXmotchi (which sounds like “Egumotchi” if you say it in Japanese) comes in 2 colors: white and red. Both have the band’s name, “EXILE,” written big at the top. Just above the buttons, it says “TMGC” to show it’s still a Tamagotchi.
What makes the EXmotchi special is that it can go to a place in the game called the EXFAMILY site. Here, you get a special bag of seeds. These aren’t normal seeds. When you plant them and take care of them, they grow into trees that give you love letters.
This team-up between Tamagotchi and the band Exile shows how Tamagotchi tries to stay popular and current. It gives fans of the band and the toy something new and fun. People might want to collect the EXmotchi because it’s special, and it adds a new twist to how you usually play with a Tamagotchi.
Tips & Tricks
1. The TMGC+C has a cool weather system. It’s not just for show. When there are storms or strong winds, your pet can’t go outside. This makes the game feel more real.
2. As the year pass by, you’ll see different scenes that match the seasons. You might see cherry blossoms in spring, a snow palace in winter, or a big harvest moon in fall. This helps you feel like time is passing in your pet’s world.
3. To make it work, you need 2 AAA batteries. Put them both facing the same way in a little door on the back. You open this door by pressing a small button and sliding it. The toy comes with batteries. After you put them in, you need to press a small button with something pointy but not sharp, like a paperclip.
4. You can turn the sound on or off with a secret menu. When you’re in the house and no icons are lit up, hold down the right button (C) and press the left button (A) at the same time. This shows you a menu where you can turn the sound on or off.
5. On the clock screen, pressing the left button (A) switches between 12-hour time (like 2:00 PM) and 24-hour time (like 14:00).
6. You can change how bright the screen is. On the clock screen, hold down the right button (C) and press the middle button (B). Then use the left button (A) to make it darker or the middle button (B) to make it brighter. Press the right button (C) to save your choice. Even at its lowest setting, the screen remains visible in normal indoor lighting. For optimal visibility in bright sunlight, you may need to use the highest brightness level.
7. You can pause the game by leaving it on the screen where you set the clock.
8. If you don’t touch it for 30 seconds, the screen turns off, but the game keeps running. Your pet can still get hungry or need something, and it will beep to let you know (unless you turned the sound off).

Lucky Items
The Tamagotchi Plus Color features 7 special items that enhance the happiness meter:
1. Rainbow: Use the rainbow watering can obtained through a lottery.
2. Shooting star: Visible when using the telescope on a clear night.
3. 4-leaf clover: Discovered by using the magnifying glass during pleasant weather.
4. Popsicle stick: Found after eating a blue popsicle.
5. Tea: Appears when drinking Japanese tea.
6. Heart-shaped cloud: Visible outside during nice weather.
7. Hapihapi: Obtained by eating a HapiHapi heart.
Except for the Hapihapi item, players should expect to make numerous attempts before successfully acquiring each Lucky Item.
Once you’ve successfully collected all 7 lucky items, the castle of the Gotchi King becomes accessible. At the castle, you can participate in an exclusive game that offers significantly higher rewards. While the three regular games cap winnings at 100 Gotchi Points, the Gotchi King’s game allows players to earn up to 500 Gotchi Points in a single play.
Note: When your current character departs and a new one hatches, all previously gathered lucky items disappear.
Royal Castle House
You can turn your Tamagotchi’s house into a fancy Royal Castle. To do this, you need to change all the rooms inside to royal theme. There are 5 rooms you need to change: Living Room, kitchen, toilet, bathroom, bedroom. Each room costs 3,000 Gotchi points. So to change all 5 rooms, you need 15,000 Gotchi points.
Once you’ve changed all the rooms, something cool happens. When you press the middle button to go outside, you’ll see that your house has turned into a castle!
But there’s no special show or animation when this happens. It just changes right away when you go outside. Also, this only works with the royal theme. Other themes won’t change how your house looks from the outside.
Growing Trees
To plant a tree:
- Look for the icon of a treasure chest and tap it.
- Choose the first option in the menu that pops up.
- You’ll see a list of things you own. Scroll through this list until you find the seed package you want to use.
- Tap on the seed package to choose it.
Remember, you can only grow one tree at a time. After you’ve harvested a tree, you can plant a new one.
Here’s a good thing to know: You only need to buy a seed package once. It doesn’t run out, so you can use it over and over again to plant new trees.
What can grow from seeds:
Mystery Seed: This comes for free when you start the game.
Money: Grow from Mystery Seeds. You get a one-time payout of 500 GP, 1000 GP, or 2000 GP when it ripens.
Poop: grows from Mystery Seed.

Sometimes a tree dies before it fully grows. If your character’s happiness is low on the day the tree matures, there’s a 50% chance it will die.
There’s a special bottle called “NyokiNyoki” that you can buy at TamaDepa. If you use this bottle on a baby tree (called a sapling), it will grow into a big tree in just a few seconds.
If you don’t have enough money for the “NyokiNyoki” bottle, there’s a trick you can use:
- Set the clock in your game to 6:59 AM.
- Wait one minute until it’s 7:00 AM.
- Your Tamagotchi character will wake up.
- Right away, check on your tree.
- Do this over and over until your tree is fully grown.
To check on your tree, press the middle button (B) when no icons are lit up on the screen. This will take you outside where you can see your tree.
This trick works because the tree grows a little bit each day when your character wakes up. By changing the time, you’re making the game think it’s a new day over and over again.
