I learned about modern day usury in May when my credit card bill did not show up. Perhaps it went into the spam or junk folders or fell victim to a glitch, all possibilities being joys of the digital revolution. Consequently the amount due on May 18 did not get paid until 4 days later on May 22 when an unpaid bill notice appeared in the email.
The notice told me that I am charged a late payment fee of $29 plus an interest charge of $61.54. So a 4 day late payment cost me $90.54.
The late payment notice told me that my interest rate of 19.49% is charged from the “first day of the billing period until we receive your payment in full.” In other words,the interest was not charged for the 4 late days, but for the 4 days plus the month’s billing period.
The notice also told me that if I missed a second payment, even for one day, during a 12 month period, my interest rate on my unpaid balance would jump from 19.49 to 29.99.https://www.

Oil, coal and gas use have been at plateaus since late 2018, when peak "oil + natural-gas-liquids" occurred. The oil is deeper and more expensive (in oil equivalents) to obtain, so extraction seems to be at economic limits.
Additionally, copper mines are peaking, and there are no new big mines. Copper and aluminum use for a diffuse electrical conduction infrastructure, does not look like it can be increased. The situation with the ability to build batteries in a world with limited nickel, lithium and cadmium is the same. there is not enough.
What individuals can do is to use less, and prepare for intermittent availability. A gasoline powered car works when the grid is down, for instance. A poorly-insulated all-electric house puts a person at a lot of risk in extreme weather, when the power is more likely to fail. Cold kills.https://
